Statistical leaders among Tennessee teams in the Southern League

Second baseman Vimael Machin of the Tennessee Smokies is batting .294, but that is good enough to be among the Southern League leaders in batting average. (photo by Mike Morrow)

The story in the Class AA Southern League in Tennessee is the same as in the major leagues — lots of home runs, lot of strikeouts and lots of low batting averages.

No one seems to mind that mix, and no reason exists to believe it will change anytime soon.

There’s a mentality in baseball today of feast or famine. The world seems fine with it. One of the strangest examples rests in the shortstop for the Jackson Generals, Jazz Chisholm.

Chisholm is second in the Southern League in home runs with 17, behind Chattanooga’s Ibandel Isabel, who has 23. Yet Chisholm has a remarkably low batting average of .201. What makes that remarkable is that Chisholm is still regarded as the eighth best shortstop prospect in baseball, according to mlb.com’s rankings. He also remains the top-ranked prospect among all positions for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Tennessee teams in the Southern League mirror the trends in the league overall. The league has only three current players with a batting average over .300. Among the players in Tennessee, there is only one above .300, third baseman Mitch Nay of the Chattanooga Lookouts, batting .304.

Nay’s batting average is good enough for third in the league. Tennessee Smokies second baseman Vimael Machin is batting .294, which is good enough for fifth in the league, and ranks second among the players for Tennessee’s three teams in the league. Machin’s 44 RBIs are good for a tie for 10th in the league.

The Southern League’s current top overall prospect, according to mlb.com’s Pipeline, is outfielder Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels organization. The Angels’ AA affiliate is in Mobile.

Statistics in any form can be deceiving. MLB.com still has Chattanooga’s Taylor Trammell ranked the Cincinnati Reds’ top prospect and 25th overall. He is the top overall prospect among Tennessee teams in the league. Yet Trammell is not among the league leaders statistically.

Another notable trend in the Southern League is the continued value of prospects of the Atlanta Braves, including baseball’s overall 12th ranked prospect, outfielder Christian Pache, who plays for Mississippi. Other notable Braves prospects at Mississippi are pitcher Ian Anderson, who leads the league in strikeouts with 129 and is ranked 24th overall, and outfielder Drew Waters, who leads the league in hitting with a .335 average and is ranked the 42nd best overall prospect in baseball.

Here are the statistical leaders, first only for players among the three Tennessee teams, then the entire Southern League:
